Ramata Barley Seed

Ramata is a six-row barley for autumn sowing. It was bred by the French breeding house Agri Obtentions and registered in Türkiye in 2015 in the name of Granar Tarım. In the 2013-2014 registration trials it came first among six-row varieties with 694.1 kg per decare.

What being six-row changes

In six-row barleys the grains sit in paired ranks and the ear carries more grains than a two-row ear does. Grain size and uniformity, on the other hand, are where two-row types are strong. Ramata tries to hold both ends: it pairs the grain count of the six-row structure with a high test weight and a rich starch content.

How it behaves in the field

The ears are of medium length and fully nodding. In practice that means no ear breakage: even if harvest slips by a few days the grain stays on the plant. The awns are long, so bird damage is not an issue.

The straw is sound and resistant to lodging. Lodging is one of the commonest causes of yield loss once the ear fills and grows heavy; strong straw cuts that risk and also lets the combine work the field cleanly. Straw yield is high for the same reason — a second line for growers who keep livestock.

Tillering is strong: every sown seed turns into more than one ear, so plant density recovers itself in years when emergence is thin.

Maturity is medium. Cold tolerance is good, so autumn sowing works even where winters are hard. Its alternative habit means it can be held over to spring in regions where barley is spring-sown.

Water decides the outcome

This variety wants water. It performs best on irrigated ground or on bottomland with a reliable rainfall pattern — that is where the ceiling of 1000 kg per decare comes from. It is not fussy about soil and will grow on dryland too, but drought tolerance is only moderate. Dry, unirrigated conditions are not where Ramata shines; for those, Manava — two-row, early and more drought-tolerant — is the better choice.

Grain and quality

The grain is medium-sized, pale yellow and uniform. Test weight 64-67 kg/hl, thousand-grain weight 35-38 g, protein 13-14%.

That protein figure is high for a feed barley. When high starch and high protein come together, energy and protein in the ration come from the same grain.

Disease

Tolerant to powdery mildew and the rusts, and also to barley leaf stripe and barley leaf spot. Those two can shrink leaf area fast in a cool, wet spring and cut grain filling short; tolerance takes the pressure off spraying.

Sowing and yield

We recommend 25-30 kg per decare under rainfed conditions and 22-25 kg under irrigation. Yield runs 350-400 kg/da rainfed and 600-1000 kg/da irrigated.

Winter barley is sown in autumn while the soil still has moisture; a crop that goes into winter well tillered suffers less cold damage and recovers faster in spring. Ramata's cold tolerance and strong tillering cover both needs.
