Triticale is a grain obtained by crossing wheat with rye. It is sown both for grain and for green forage.

What is triticale

Its name comes from its two parents: the botanical name of wheat is Triticum, that of rye is Secale. The aim is to combine wheat’s grain quality with rye’s hardiness in a single plant.

Why it is grown

Triticale is a dual-purpose crop. The grain goes to feed; the straw and green matter become forage and bedding. Getting both grain and straw from one field suits growers who want to cover their feed needs from their own land.

In our catalogue the wheat varieties are sown for bread and durum quality and the barley varieties for feed. Triticale sits between the two: the grain goes to feed, the stem to straw.

Ramdam triticale seed

Our triticale variety is Ramdam, bred by the French breeding house Agri Obtentions and registered in France in 2018. In the registration trials it received the top score for both grain and straw yield, so it leads in both of triticale’s uses at once.

The plant is quite tall yet lodging resistance is good — an uncommon combination in tall varieties. Cold tolerance is good, heading semi-early, sowing type semi-alternative. High resistance to brown rust, tolerant to mosaic virus. Thousand-grain weight is high.
